A Flashpacking List

This post is to serve as a haunting reminder of all the stuff I brought but shouldn’t have on my trip.

When the idea to start backpacking came along I had only one worry: looking like a backpacker. I switched my primarily Yohji-hobo wardrobe over to techwear in order to get fashion and function out of a limited set of clothes. However, I guess when I lay it all out it doesn’t seem that limited.

While trying to find the top ten travel cliches I want to avoid, I found out that I had become one, a flashpacker, or a champagne backpacker, with brand clothes, expensive gadgets, and cool sunglasses.

Leading up to the trip I went ahead and started forming a capsule wardrobe which did and didn’t work sometimes. Here’s my packing list, please don’t base yours off of mine because in three months I’m probably going to be full of regret.

Electronics
Electronics: To iPad or not to iPad?

Electronics:

  • enevu Cube Light
  • Apple Watch Sport Edition
  • Sony a6000
  • Macbook
  • Macbook dongle because nothing works with this thing
  • iPhone X
  • AirPods
  • Travel Adapter
  • USB Battery Pack
  • nook

(at the time of writing this I’m waffling on also bringing my iPad along, doesn’t seem very minimalist of me, but I do need a MacBook because I will be coding on the go)

Things I did not photograph:

  • Mission Workshop Vandal Backpack (expands up to 65L)
  • as2ov wall pocket
  • Lay-n-Go Cosmo
  • Rumpl blanket (an absolute must)
  • Sleep Sheets
  • Travel Locks (will I need these?)
  • Bullet Journal and pens
  • Darn Tough Socks (a big deal for me because I hate socks)
  • 3 Bras & 5 Panties
  • Nylon Stuff Sacks
  • Foldable Yoga Mat (I will be teaching classes, but this doubles as a towel too!)
  • Mini-Hair Straightener
  • EagleCreek Compression Cubes that make this all possible
  • Selfie Light (the brightest flashlight I own)
  • All the chargers and stuff to make electronics go

All in all, everything fits into about 40L of my backpack, and is about 25 pounds so it’s not as terrible as it looks. I think it’s super obvious to everyone reading this that I work(ed) for Nike as almost half my wardrobe is Nike.

I can’t wait to revisit this post in a few months and see what I’ve shipped back home to my parents from abroad. I have a feeling that once I’m out of winter, a lot of the bulky items will go.
